Living with Parkinson’s Disease brings many changes, and for many people, that includes challenges with speaking and swallowing. These symptoms can impact not only health and safety but also connection with others — making it harder to express thoughts, share stories, or enjoy meals with family and friends.

At Coffs Neuro Physio, we understand that Parkinson’s care needs to be holistic. That’s why we offer dedicated Speech Pathology support, alongside physiotherapy, to help people manage the full range of symptoms that affect day-to-day life.

Heather Wilson, our experienced Speech Pathologist, works with adults with neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, to assess and address communication and swallowing difficulties. Heather has extensive training in the LSVT LOUD program, an effective speech treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions.

Heather says, “Early intervention can make a big difference — not just in how a person communicates, but in their confidence, independence, and safety.”

People with Parkinson’s may experience a soft or monotone voice, slurred or unclear speech, trouble finding the right words, or difficulty understanding complex information.

Swallowing challenges can include coughing when eating or drinking, a feeling of food ‘getting stuck,’ or issues with drooling and controlling their saliva.

Heather offers:

  • Comprehensive assessments to identify communication or swallowing difficulties
  • Personalised therapy plans tailored to individual needs and goals
  • Education for families and carers to support consistent care at home
  • Liaison with the broader healthcare team, ensuring a coordinated approach
  • Ongoing reviews and adjustments as the person’s needs change

Sessions may include individual therapy, group work, or communication partner training, depending on what suits the person best.

Speech pathology and physiotherapy are complementary services. While Physiotherapists focus on improving movement, balance and physical function;

Speech Pathologists assess and treat communication and swallowing disorders.

Together these therapies support a more wholistic quality of life for clients.

“We often see the best outcomes when physio and speech therapy are working side by side,” Heather explains. “Clients might be improving their walking and balance in physio, while also building stronger communication skills and safer swallowing habits in speech sessions. It’s about giving people the tools to stay connected and active in their everyday lives.”

Coffs Neuro Physio provides a warm, supportive environment where clients feel understood and empowered. Heather’s approach is practical, goal-oriented, and grounded in everyday situations — whether it’s helping someone be heard more clearly in conversations or making sure they can eat safely without discomfort or fear.

If you or someone you care for is living with Parkinson’s and experiencing changes in speech or swallowing, support is available.
