Stroke and Brain Injury

Evidence-based stroke and brain injury programs, tailored to the needs of each individual.

Speech Brain injuries can have a range of causes, including stroke, trauma, brain tumours and infection.  They can result in impairment across a range of domains, including physical, cognitive, social, behavioural, perceptual, etc.

The good news is that with targeted therapy, skills that have been lost may be able to be regained as the brain adapts to new ways of learning. This requires specific therapy techniques from a team of therapists who are experienced in this area.

Our Physio and Speech programs promote intensity, variation and challenge to drive real and lasting changes in the brain, just as the research suggests. We also aim to minimise secondary complications that can lead to further disability.

One of our experienced Neuro Physiotherapists or Speech Pathologists will assess your needs, goals, function and impairments, and discuss with you a treatment plan designed to maximise your potential.

Intensity and Dosage is key!

If you are looking for maximal improvement, your therapy may involve participating in one of our intensive therapy blocks, where key areas such as your walking, balance, arm function, communication or any other personal goal you may have can be targeted.

You and your therapist may consider our Stroke and Brain Injury exercise group to help you increase your practice and challenge yourself in a motivating and supportive setting, supervised by an experienced Neuro Physiotherapist.

It may also be recommended that our Allied Health Assistant become involved to ensure you are able to practice your exercises in a safe and effective way to achieve your goals.

Speech Pathology in Brain Injury

Speech pathology plays a crucial role in stroke recovery, helping people regain communication and swallowing abilities through targeted therapy and by supporting families in understanding and facilitation communication.

Some of the common challenges that can occur following stroke include:

  • Aphasia: a language disorder that affects how a person communicates. It can affect a person’s ability to speak, write and understand both spoken and written language.
  • Dysarthria: occurs when the muscles involved in speech are weak and not coordinated, resulting in slurred or unclear speech.
  • Dysphagia: refers to difficulty swallowing. Dysphagia can be dangerous as food or drink can enter the airway and lungs and can cause a person to choke or aspirate.
  • Cognitive Impairments: stroke can also affect cognitive functions like memory, attention to task, problem solving etc which can also impact communication.

The benefits of having speech therapy following a stroke can be significant.

Our Speech Pathologist will assess your communication and swallowing and work with you to focus on regaining the skills that are important for independence and quality of life.

Wholistic approach

We may also make recommendations across a range of areas that we feel your brain injury may be affecting you, to compliment your therapy and progress. This may include supporting you to acquire a piece of equipment or seek medical management for things like spasticity.
