Neuro Respiratory Service

Training for the muscles required for breathing and lung function

The breathing muscles and structures are often affected in people with neurological conditions, which can result in a change in lung function and lung volumes. This can lead to issues like breathlessness, inability to cough and clear the lungs, soft voice and fatigue.

Inspiratory muscles include the diaphragm and external intercostals, and expiratory muscles primarily involve the abdominals. Just like any other muscles, these all need to be trained against resistance to maintain or increase their strength.

We offer a Neuro respiratory service to help look after those people whose breathing muscles and structures have been affected by their neurological condition. We use spirometry to assess lung function and guide treatment. Whether it be building inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength, strategizing around an inability to increase strength, increasing flexibility or improving posture; we are here to support your individual respiratory needs.
