Walking is one of the most accessible ways to stay active, but adding poles can turn an everyday walk into a more challenging, full-body exercise.

Nordic Walking uses specially designed poles to encourage a stronger, more purposeful walking pattern. Urban Poling works in a similar way, with poles designed to support posture, stability and upper-body involvement while walking.

Using poles can increase the involvement of the arms, shoulders and trunk, while also encouraging longer steps, improved arm swing and a more upright posture. This can make walking more physically demanding without necessarily increasing the impact on the joints.

For people living with a neurological condition, Nordic Walking or Urban Poling may help to target:

  • Walking speed and endurance
  • Posture and arm swing
  • Coordination and rhythm
  • Balance and confidence
  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Participation in outdoor exercise

The poles may also provide an additional point of contact with the ground, which can help some people feel more secure when walking outdoors or across uneven surfaces.

However, using poles safely and effectively requires the right equipment and technique. A neurological physiotherapist can assess your walking, determine whether pole-assisted walking is suitable and teach you how to use the poles in a way that supports your individual goals.

“Nordic Walking is a great way to make walking more purposeful. It allows us to work on posture, coordination, fitness and confidence while practising a meaningful activity in the community.”
