Regular exercise is an important part of managing many neurological conditions. Group classes and independent exercise programs can help increase exercise dosage, build confidence and support long-term consistency.
However, even when exercise is going well, regular one-to-one reviews with your neurological physiotherapist remain important.
Neurological conditions can change over time, and so can your strength, balance, walking, fatigue, mobility and personal goals. These changes are not always obvious. An exercise program that was appropriate several months ago may now be too easy, too difficult or no longer targeting the areas that matter most.
During an individual review, your physiotherapist can reassess your movement and function, review your progress and identify any new concerns. This may include looking at:
- Walking and balance
- Strength and endurance
- Transfers and everyday mobility
- Falls or near misses
- Pain, fatigue or stiffness
- Changes in equipment or walking aids
- New personal goals
Your program can then be progressed or adapted to ensure it remains safe, specific and challenging.
One-to-one reviews are also an opportunity to discuss changes in medication, confidence, participation or daily activities. They can help identify small issues before they become bigger barriers.
“Group exercise and self-management are incredibly valuable, but they work best when they are supported by regular individual reviews. We want to make sure every person is still working towards the right goals at the right level, and is getting the most of our their group classes.”
— Amanda O’Neill, Founder of Coffs Neuro Physio
You do not need to wait until something goes wrong to book a review. Regular reassessment helps keep your exercise program relevant, purposeful and responsive to your changing needs.
